At the beginning of March we had a visit from Clíona Connolly, Environment Awareness Officer with Wexford County Council. She came to see how we were getting on with our efforts to achieve our next Green School Flag. Great work has been done over the last 18 months and Clíona Connolly was very impressed with all the initiatives going on at present. Clíona visited our classrooms, met with the Green Schools Committee and inspected our very informative Green Schools Notice Board.
Congratulations to all pupils and in particular Our Green School Committee who gave Clíona a comprehensive overview of the work being done in our school. We will soon be submitting our application for the Energy Themed Flag and are very hopeful to be successful in achieving this. On the 18th of January our school held our green School ‘Day of Action’. As part of our work on the theme ‘Energy’ we had a day of action and we decided to have a ‘Low Energy Day’! So that meant no lights, no interactive whiteboards, no laptops and no energy! We hoped that it would show us how much we depend on energy and electricity and that we should try our best to save energy. Throughout the day, our Green Schools committee acted as monitors checking energy conservation in our classrooms. Everybody made a big effort to have switches and appliances turned off when we weren’t using them. We also kept our windows closed to retain heat and our sensor lights dimmed throughout the day. The teachers also made a huge effort not to use the microwave, the photocopier or printers. We were busy taking energy readings at the start and the end of the day. We were successful with our low energy day using nearly three time less energy than any other day that week. It was a great success well done to all involved!!

We had a Low Energy Day on the 18th of January. It was very successful as we noticed a great decrease in energy usage compared to a normal school day. More Low Energy Days are planned for the coming weeks! This is an example of one of the many ways Kiltealy N.S. are working towards our second Green Flag, the Energy Flag.

Rackard League District Champions
Congratulations to all the 5th and 6th class pupils who were part of the victorious Rackard League Football Team. The team defeated Oulart in the Enniscorthy District Final yesterday on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-2.
Padraig Waters (1-2) had a great game, getting vital scores in the first half when there was very little between the teams. Ryan Purcell used his height to his advantage at full forward, making things very difficult for the Oulart full back line.
Danny Fitzhenry was very influential at midfield, supplying great balls into the forwards. Dylan Purcell, David Nolan and Noel Cowman were powerful in the backs throughout the 50 minutes. James Aylward was introduced towards the end and made his mark on the game.
Kiltealy players: Ryan Purcell, Padraig Waters, Danny Fitzhenry, David Nolan, Dylan Purcell, Noel Cowman, James Aylward, Jacques Neville and Cillian Hanrahan all made appearances on the team throughout the league campaign.
The team now go on to contest the county semi-final which will be played after the mid-term break.
Well done to the boys for getting this far in the league. We are very proud of their success and we will be out again in numbers to support them on their quest to the final.

The pupils of Kiltealy impressed again this year with fantastic efforts going into Halloween costumes.
Ghosts and goblins, witches and werewolves, zombies and skeletons; were scattered throughout the group that traveled around the village.
We stopped off to see the children from the playschool in their costumes and they treated us to a song and nursery rhyme.
We continued down through the village to the carpark where our group photo was taken before making our way back to the school.

Green School Energy Experts
The 5th & 6th Class members of the Green School Committee were out and about spreading their knowledge on Energy. The Energy Experts had spent a few days learning all about energy, what we need energy for, where this energy comes from and what the future holds.
Having gained all their knowledge the 5th and 6th class pupils created a survey for children from 1st class to 4th class to see how much they knew about energy.
They then created a power-point about energy that they would present to the other classes in the school to make them more energy aware.
The classes were informed about non-renewable energy sources of coal, oil and gas. The burning of these fossil fuels can have negative effects on our environment causing climate change. These non-renewable energy sources are also running out.
We can help our environment by using less energy and also using alternative sources of renewable energy. The presentation provided the children with information on renewable energy sources.
After the presentations the pupils then took the energy survey for a second time and it was very evident that they had gained lots of new knowledge and were now more energy aware.
The Green School Committee came up with lots of ways in which we can save energy and use less energy within our school environment.
They have begun “The Switch It Off” campaign. They have created LOLO (Last Out Lights OFF) signs and TAYTO (Turn All Your Things Off) signs to remind us all to use less energy.
Well done to 5th & 6th classes and The Green School Committee for all their hard work to date.

Primary Planet News!!!
Each month our 5th & 6th classes receive their own copy of The Primary Planet. The Primary Planet is Ireland’s first children’s news magazine. News, sport, music, entertainment, and politics are some of the many topics featured in this exciting publication each month. Aimed at the senior classes, this newspaper style glossy magazine contains 40 pages of fresh, topical and up to date features each month.
Its purpose is to bring news, sport and entertainment to children in a language they understand and in a manner they can easily relate to. It also encourages children to read and write for a purpose, providing opportunities for them to contribute to the magazine and engage with our readers.
There is always great excitement when the monthly delivery arrives into our classroom.
Keep an eye on our web page to find out what new, interesting, fun and inspiring things our class has learned from reading The Primary Planet.

3rd – 6th class Music
3rd – 6th class are sounding superb in their music lessons. All pupils are learning to play the tin whistle. For a lot of them this is their first time learning a musical instrument. We have a great music group formed with a variety of instruments. We look forward to hearing their talents at various school events throughout the year.

Yoga Moves in 5th & 6th
5th & 6th enjoyed their Yoga for Kids Programme in P.E. over the past 6 weeks. Each yoga position had a name eg. hero, bridge, happy cat, up dog, sprinter. Groups of children wrote stories using the vocabulary of the yoga positions. They then narrated the story while acting out their yoga positions.
Entrance Exams!!
Best of luck to all our 6th class pupils sitting their entrance exams over the next two weekends in both the FCJ and Vocational College in Bunclody!
