Active Schools

Our active line leaders are busy putting their classes through the paces at break times while our senior playground leaders are assisting the junior classes with yard games. Thank you to Ms. Kehoe and our Active Committee who keep these challenges going for the whole school.

Active Schools Update!!!

Our school provides twice daily playground breaks
Our school promotes the full range of fundamental movement skills during break times and pupils are permitted to run.
Our school yard is zoned to allow children to engage in a variety of different activities.

All pupils engage in an extended classroom based physical activity break on wet days.
Short physical activity breaks (go noodle etc.) are used on a regular basis.
Our school has removed ‘sweets as treats’ and replaced it with physical activity rewards

Christmas Disco!

The Christmas Disco was a great success. There was great excitement when Santy came to visit the children. Although it was hard to catch them standing still, I managed to get a few photographs of the boys and girls during the Christmas Disco.

Spring Clean time in Kiltealy. Everybody worked hard collecting rubbish around the village. First and Second class ensured that their section around the hall was spotless! Well done everybody!

Halloween Walk 2016

The pupils of Kiltealy impressed again this year with fantastic efforts going into Halloween costumes.

Ghosts and goblins, witches and werewolves, zombies and skeletons; were scattered throughout the group that traveled around the village.

We stopped off to see the children from the playschool in their costumes and they treated us to a song and nursery rhyme.

We continued down through the village to the carpark where our group photo was taken before making our way back to the school.

Funky Kids Workshop Certificate Presentation

Following on from the great success of our Funky Kids Christmas Concerts, the pupils received their certificates for their participation in the Dancing and singing Workshops. Well done to all involved what a fun way to get fit and active.

Dance Workshop Fun

On the 19^th and 20^th of December, after three months of practice, the children finally put on their Funky Kids Concert for all their family and friends. It was a fantastic show filled with lots of brilliant singing and dancing. There was something for everyone, from Noah’s Ark and The Grease Melody to Puppet on a String and Monster Mash. It was great to see everybody up singing and dancing and having FUN!

Well done to everyone involved especially the stars of our show, the children. The staff and children from Kiltealy N.S.would like to thank Denis and Olivia (Funky Kids) for all their hard work over the past few months!

Céilí Fun

The whole school participated in a céilí

Ionsaí na hInse was the dance of choice while the infants practiced their Irish Dancing steps in a group circle. As you can see from our photos this was an enjoyable afternoon.

The best group of dancers was from the senior room- Ryan, Cillian, Emma, Rebecca, Lauren, Caoimhe, Heather and Aisling! Well done to all who took part

National Spring Clean … Green way to get Active!!!

Well done to all pupils in Kiltealy N.S who took part in our National Spring Clean Day on Thursday 27th April. Each class group covered a different area of the village and did a great job in cleaning up their allocated area. Areas covered were the school grounds, Griffith Avenue, the hall carpark, the main street, the church carpark and inside the graveyard walls.

Mini Sevens!!!

Mini Sevens Hurling and Camogie News

Congratulations to both our hurling and camogie team on reaching Round 2 of the Allianz Cumann na mBunscoil Mini Sevens League.

Our camogie team had an impressive victory over St. Aidans in Round One ensuring a place in the 2nd Round.

Our hurlers played 2 games in Round One and emerged as group winners. They had quite a comprehensive win over Boolavogue in their first game. They beat St. Aidans in the second game on a scoreline of 6-5 to 0-2.

Well done to both teams and best of luck in Round 2. These matches will be played next week.

After a great Round 1 start to their Mini Sevens campaign, our teams failed to emerge from the Round 2 qualifiers. Well done to both teams on a tremendous effort.

We now turn our focus to the Rackard League Hurling and Camogie tournaments.

10@10 – Operation Transformation

Well done to all the boys and girls who participated in the 10@10 this morning.

Primary schools all over the country got up and moving this morning as part of a country wide initiative called 10@10. The 10@10 is an Operation Transformation initiative to get children to do 10 minutes of exercise at 10 am during the RTÉ One series and to continue the mini-workout into the future.

The popular lifestyle programme is celebrating its tenth year making this morning’s workout, that is happening in primary schools nationwide, all the more special.

The boys and girls in our school were divided into mixed aged groups with children from each class. The children who are on the Active Schools Committee were the leaders of each group. They had to guide the younger children and ensure that their team stayed together and kept moving!!!

We set up six stations with a leader at each station explaining what to do. To begin with we did a short warm up and when the whistle blew, we got started. We spent 1 and 1/2 minutes at each station. Once the whistle blew we moved again! We even had music to add to the fun!

Station 1: Running, side steps, high knees and heel kicks!

Station 2: Hula hooping!

Station 3: Squats, squat jumps, squat punches!

Station 4: Skipping!

Station 5: Jumping jacks, scissor jumps and hip jumps!

Our school has put initiatives in place during break times to encourage less active children to exercise more

This year our school has a policy of ‘Walk and Talk’. Children must continue to keep active while talking to their friends by walking around the school grounds.

We organise different activities at break time such as soccer, no man’s land game, skipping, hula hooping, teaching the children playgrounds games etc.

We also invested in break time resources by getting active free play sports kits containing a variety of sports equipment to keep the children active during breaks.

While lining up after break the children practice active lines. Whole school rewards are given for the most active line each week at school assembly.

Whole School Running Initiative!

The whole school are taking part in a fun running initiative. The children are running from Malin Head to Mizen Head plotting their journey along the way. This is a whole school initiative with a fun interactive notice board to plot their journey. The classes enjoy pin pointing where exactly they are on the map. There are a number of main towns marked on the map which they have to go through before they reach their final destination, Mizen Head. The whole school love working in their class groups to get as far as they can along the route.
